Clear those counters, dude! A good rule of thumb to keep you on track is that all the major surfaces around the house should remain as clear as possible. It creates not only a sense of calm but also good work surfaces.
Cooking, kids doing homework, putting together a bookcase from Sweden that is mocking you with its gender neutral drawings and most likely missing pieces, all benefit from having clean surfaces.
These include but are not limited to:
Kitchen counters
Kitchen islands
Bathroom sink areas
Laundry room counters
Fireplace mantels
Wet bar (lucky duck)
Home office desk
Just look around and you’ll see what I mean, surfaces are everywhere. But here’s the sometimes surprising fact: YOUR FLOOR is the largest surface in your house!
Time to get all that stuff off the floor and organized! We’re not talking perfection, we’re talking taking control of the situation.
We’ll go over that in detail soon. But for now let me leave you with this: if you are stuck on where you should start in getting a room in order, clean off the surfaces. Aggressively throw stuff away that is trash when it comes down to it, and accommodate as much as possible in cabinets.

Great tip. I may have to just start with one small area of floor space. Otherwise I’ll be overwhelmed. Baby steps.
Absolutely, never put yourself in the place of being overwhelmed. If you are standing in a room with the thought “I don’t know where to start” just start by clearing a surface – I promise you it will help clarify what you should do next.
